10 The Kitchen

Words by Shaina Yang

My mother demystified the kitchen
with her soups improvised from leftovers
and the box cakes we painstakingly mixed
with chopsticks and that one silver spoon
that didn’t match the rest
My father was the one who wrapped it in that
intangible mystique made magic through everyday tradition;
the smell of liaojiu
and its unmistakable crackle as it hit hot oil
creating home every night for dinner

Chores is a collection of eighteen hand-embroidered vintage chore coats, celebrating the beauty of earnest labor. Each piece is a vintage garment transformed through a unique pattern of hand-embroidery, inspired by the unintentional yet beautiful splatters left on an old painting smock.

Because they are vintage pieces, each coat is slightly different in size, fabric, and condition.

10 The Kitchen measures:

Cross Chest 22" (49" Bust)
Body Length 27"
Sleeve Length 23"

The fabric is a midweight cotton twill with black stitching, hard-wearing with a soft but structured drape. It is in great condition, with no noticeable wear and tear. Unique to this coat is a flat-felled seam at center-back.

Please hand wash cold with mild detergent, and line dry. Warm iron on reverse with a little steam.

Joy's brother Justin (in photos) is 5'5" tall and measures:

Cross Chest 17" (34" Bust)
Body Length 25.5"
Sleeve Length 22"
