Chores ᐧ 24 The same

$1,080.00

That year I laid in bed a lot seeing
nothing much but sky in the three windows
surrounding — sky and gulls — which made me feel
like my tiny city studio was
actually a lighthouse on the sea where
the same
cold sky would greet each morning so empty.
I dreamt of the coast that year, adrift and
in between surgeries; awake before
dawn because the gulls screeched my pain for me.

24 The same features distinctive embroidery on its front collar, as well as a few hidden stitches tucked behind the button placket. But the bulk of the embroidery migrates from the front pocket to the back, where it traces quiet paths across the left hand side — but not before leaving a secret in the front pocket. Meanwhile, dark blue stitching almost disappears against the plaid of the inner lining; the embroidered name stitched nearby hints at their presence nonetheless.

Garment measures 44" cross chest (side seam to side seam), 27.5" body length (high point shoulder to hem). Made from a vintage 100% cotton chore coat, cotton embroidery floss, glass beads, and lining reconstructed from antique indigo-dyed cotton fabric scraps. Please dry clean or hand wash cold with mild detergent and line dry, warm iron on reverse with a little steam.

Chores  ᐧ  Collection 2  ᐧ  Season 1 (2023, No. 19-28)

Made in collaboration with architect and poet Shaina Yang
and patternmaker Lorraine Lum

This season contains ten embroidered vintage chore coats with reconstructed linings, patchworked from antique indigo-dyed fabric scraps.

Each coat was embroidered in tandem with a corresponding poem written from a memory of the seaside — the seaside providing a consistent backdrop across shifting eras and emotions. Together, they recollect the ways in which our surroundings can witness, support, or even force changes happening on the inside.
