Chores ᐧ 22 Their sands still smooth

I can’t even say Llandanwg but it
still feels akin to home with you with me —
their stones still hued in grey and bone and blue;
their sands still smooth.
My hand in yours electric, I follow
you up and then back down as you recall
youthful dips in icy cold, and the same
summer drizzles as now back then. I’d brave
the wind that swept me, just to hear again
you reminisce like you so rarely do.

Poem by Shaina Yang

22 Their sands still smooth displays its visual metaphor in grains of beading scattered across the front and sprinkled on the back — recalling found objects in the sand, or perhaps stars in a moonless sky. The coat’s four-word name — the longest of the collection — glitters in blue glass bugles that form the only beaded lettering of the cohort, glistening against the ribbons of yellow and red woven into the lining.

Garment measures 48" cross chest (side seam to side seam), 25" body length (high point shoulder to hem). Made from a vintage 100% cotton chore coat, cotton embroidery floss, glass beads, and lining reconstructed from antique indigo-dyed cotton fabric scraps. Please dry clean or hand wash cold with mild detergent and line dry, warm iron on reverse with a little steam.

Chores  ᐧ  Collection 2  ᐧ  Season 1 (2023, No. 19-28)

Made in collaboration with architect and poet Shaina Yang
and patternmaker Lorraine Lum

This season contains ten embroidered vintage chore coats with reconstructed linings, patchworked from antique indigo-dyed fabric scraps.

Each coat was embroidered in tandem with a corresponding poem written from a memory of the seaside — the seaside providing a consistent backdrop across shifting eras and emotions. Together, they recollect the ways in which our surroundings can witness, support, or even force changes happening on the inside.
